what is aeration?

Aeration is the removal of small soil plugs from your yard so the roots can better access oxygen and absorb nutrients and water.

why get an aeration?

Aerations are needed to provide the proper health and maintenance of your lawn, and should be completed annually.

There are many benefits:

Aeration reduces compaction, meaning your lawn will allow water to penetrate better and leaves you with no water run off. No wasted water!

​

It opens up your lawn and helps nutrients and oxygen flow better to the roots. This will allow your lawn to breathe better. In turn, you will have a much greener and healthier lawn.

Aeration allows new grass growth from your existing lawn. New blades of grass will emerge from each opening. Aerations can also help reduce the thatch later that accumulates on the lawn especially after winter.

 

Aeration can be helpful if you want to overseed your lawn. Aerations and seedlings go hand in hand by allowing the seeds contact with the soil.

 

Be sure to leave the cores on your lawn. Although leaving the cores might make your lawn look a little bit messy, they return very much needed nutrients to your roots during the break down process. The cores are essential to healthy soil.

what is professional dethatching?

Remember that layer on top of the soil? Removing some every spring (we aim to leave about 1/2") helps retain water and allows nutrients (like your fertilizer) to reach the roots.

what about fertlizing?

Don't wait on luck for rich growth – fertilize!

Grass needs the proper amount of water and sunshine to be healthy and green, but don’t forget to feed it, too! Your lawn needs nutrients to thrive and survive. For soil to be as rich as possible, it needs 3 key elements:

  • Phosphorous

  • Nitrate

  • Potassium
     

Think of this as a 3 course meal for your lawn. When missing even one of these, your lawn will become starved and brown.

what about watering?

Grass needs the proper amount of fertilizer along with sunshine to be healthy & green.  But don't forget to water your lawn as well.

To maintain healthy lawns, it is very important for proper irrigation especially during the dry season.  Watering early in the morning or in the evening 2 to 3 times a week for about 20 minutes will provide sufficient irrigation to support deep root growth.

You need to hydrate your body, and your lawn needs water as well.  A healthy lawn is more resistant to weather fluctuations and dry weather, pests and weeds saving you time and money in the long run!
